ICS (incident command system)

This essay will be on the SAR (search and rescue) Incident command system.

In any incident, let’s say a natural disaster, such as a flood happens, the way SAR respond, is by setting up an incident command system (ICS). This is basically a command system, assigning different people to different stations.

But before we go on, there are some concepts that the ICS has

Unity of command – recognisable chain of command

Common Terminology – standard code words

Management by objective – work towards objectives

Flexible Modular Organisation – operation can grow or diminish

Span of control – no one will manage more than seven people.

The first person in the chain of command, is the incident commander, who draws up a plan and has the power to direct the operation. Next are the general command staff, a Safety officer, a Liason officer and a Public Information Officer. These three staff officers split up the operation up into three sections, so as not to cause chaos. This command system helps everyone to work together until the operation has terminated.

YouTube week 5. Building and fostering the community around you

This essay is on fostering the YouTube community around me and how I answer that question. So I recently set up my YouTube channel, and basically my content is Lego Star Wars stop motion. A big part of setting up a channel, is to build up a community around you, made up of fans and subs. To better understand how to do this, I answer the questions below.

WARNING! This is a personalised essay, so the information is from my perspective.

Why do you want to do what you do on YouTube?

What are your motivations for doing this?

How can you integrate your belief or motivations into your content?

How can you facilitate interaction around your belief and content?

To answer the first question, I think that my strongest belief, my deepest motivation, aside from money, subscribers and fans, is to create good quality stop motion. The reason for this, is that there are only a handful of good quality stop motions on YouTube. To boil it down a little, I really want to bring a new perspective to stop motion. Now, I do not want to brag about making excellent stop motion, but on behalf of the question, that is what I’d like to do. This melts into the second question, which would have the same answer.

To answer the third question, I think that it will be harder to integrate my beliefs into a Star Wars theme. But that does not mean I can’t, it just won’t be as noticeable in my vids. This means that I will probably integrate it in small bits and pieces into my content. The fourth question can be answered similarly to the third, yet I would also try to integrate it into the rest of my channel, not just in my videos.

Lesson 4. The furthest I have ever been from home

This essay will be on the places I have been furthest away from my home. Right now I am living in England, yet I have not lived here forever. I also briefly lived in Switzerland, as my mom is from there and I also lived for nine years in western Africa.

For this essay I will use my current country location, England, and calculate visits and journeys from here. The furthest I have ever been from England would be visiting Switzerland and Germany after I lived in Switzerland. I also spent one night in Istanbul, Turkey, when going through there from Africa on Turkish Air. I will not count Africa, as I have not visited since I left. So, let me explain my journeys to Germany and Switzerland. In Africa, we were with a mission organisation, reaching out to people who have not heard about Jesus. On coming back to Europe, we were still with the same organisation. This organisation would, every four years meet in a hotel in Germany. The year after we had arrived in England, we went to this conference, hence the Germany trip.

As a family, we have also been going annually to Switzerland since 2015. The reason for this is because every autumn my moms church there organises a children’s camp in the Alps. (the Alps is a famous mountain range that goes through France, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Austria, Slovenia and Liechtenstein. Anyway, we have treated these visits to Switzerland as our Holidays and we also get to see family as well. When we went through Turkey, it was because we took Turkish Air, which ran from where we were in Africa, to Turkey, then we could take the flight to Switzerland, as we also visited while we were in Africa.

I think the above countries should suffice, and if you want distances, Germany is 757 miles from where I live, Switzerland 826 miles and Turkey is 2,568 miles from my current location! This essay was hard to write as I have been to many places. As I explained, I did not include Africa, as that was my home for nine years. I think Turkey, although the stay happened just because we changed flights, would still count.

Lesson 3. My favourite school subject(s)

This is a hard essay, as there are really three subjects that really stand out to me and those are math, english and history. These subjects are my favourite, although I know that that with subjects, it really depends on what you like, so do not get the impression that I am saying that these should be other peoples favs as well. When I grow up, I would like to become an architect, so math would be very important in that job. I also like to draw, although it is not part of my school subjects as of last year. To know why I like these three, or four subjects, I explain below.

Math

This is a subject that I just somehow like. It is not that I am very good at math, I just like the subject. Math is very fascinating and I think something that appeals to me, is working stuff out. To know what the volume of an object is, its dimensions, its surface area…All of this appeals to me. Also, math is the key a whole selection of careers, making it extremely vital and important to academic studies. If I continue to study and enjoy math, becoming an architect would become that much easier.

English

This is a subject that, like math, just absolutely fascinates me. I just find it so interesting to find out the five parts of literature, how to write properly and so much more! Also, the academic values of English are just amazingly high. Learning English will help me in the future, even teaching English could be an option!

History

This is a subject that I really love and though it won’t take me as far as math, I just genuinely love the subject. Something about learning from the past is something special for me.

That’s all for my school subjects!

Lesson 1. Summer Holidays 2019

This essay is on a number of things that I have done in the 2019 summer break. I say a number of things, because I do not think that there was an event that really stood out as dominant. One thing that me and my family did, was go to the Christian United 2019 New Wine camp in Peterborough, England. The camp was great, as you could take your tent and camp on the New Wine grounds and then take part in many activities. The only drawback was the fact that the camp was canceled two days before it officially finished, due to weather warnings.

Another thing that I think was (and still is) a good experience, was having a go at LEGO stop motion filming, which we have not quite finished yet. For those who do not know what stop motion is, I’ll try to do my best to explain. The way we do stop motion is we use LEGO figures, although you can use anything really. So, you place your LEGO figure on a base plate (maybe googling: Lego man, and Lego baseplate might help if you don’t know what those are) and between shots make your figure walk. This is done by moving your figure then taking two frames with your camera, moving your figure again and taking two more shots…and so on. When you have reached your objective in the film (i.e the Lego man walking to a bus stop and getting on a bus) you compile your shots into film. Now, for this process it might be helpful to get a Stop motion app, which automatically puts your shots into a film. If you do not have an app, it is best to hand the situation over to an adult to put the film together on a computer, unless you know how to make the film on a computer yourself.

Another project me and my siblings were, and again still are doing, is making a model house out of Popsicle and cotton candy sticks. This is something that goes further back, before the summer hols and is something that we have not quite finished.

These are some things that I did or took part in during the 2019 summer holidays! Now it’s back to school.

Lesson 2. Activities

This essay is on stuff that I like doing. I suppose I do not really have a hobby, apart from doing LEGO stop motion. So the things that I will be writing about should probably be classified as activities I like doing.

One of the major things I should put down is reading. I really enjoy reading, especially exciting and action-packed books. Right now I am on the Redwallseries by Brian Jaques, which honestly, is just some of the best stuff ever written, from my point of view. So, if you have not checked out this series, I seriously recommend you do. I am also a fan of G.A Henty and Jack London. The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings were also some amazing books. I also enjoyed the Harry potter books, though probably not as much as those mentioned above. The thing with Harry Potter, is that different people have different tastes, so though it was an extremely exciting story, I do not think I enjoyed it as much as I am enjoying Redwall now, for instance.

I also really like to go Fishing, which is more of a hobby. This is an activity that you can do to get you off your sofa and that takes you outdoors. I really like to Fish because it is so exciting and is an excellent way to spend a boring day off. Recently I managed to catch my first brown trout out of a wild river, which was also very exciting. My gear has grown a bit, meaning I have more flexibility to Fish. My dad also likes to Fish and so Fishing is also a way to spend time with him. Fishing has also increased my fascination of rivers and now I find that I cannot wait when I find out that we are going to a river, whether it’s to Fish or just to walk with my family alongside the river.

I think that right now, these are my two things that I enjoy doing.

History 8. History of south and central America

The History of South and Central America from 500-1750 AD, Is quite interesting and the development through the centuries can also be uniquely painted. The similarities between the Americas and the rest of the world are, that around 500 AD, apart from Europe, other countries actually did not have hugely developed civilisations.

South America at around 500 AD, was not really developed and there were only a few small civilisations. Around 1450 AD, nothing had really changed, except that the Chimu and Inca empires had sprung up and had grown to include regions on the western coast. From 1450 onwards to 1750 though, everything changed. The discovery of North America by Columbus, sparked a new colonising era, bringing hundreds of adventurers over to the Americas. South America was quickly colonised by the Spanish and Portuguese, who completely wiped out Empires like the Incas and the Chimu people. This quick colonisation brought South America to 1750, a land mass divided by the Portuguese and the Spanish.

Similar developments happened in Central America, In now day Mexico and in the Caribbean. In Central America the Aztec and Maya kingdoms had been the two dominant ones for some time. But as in most other areas, there were also lots of small communities and tribes, spread out across the land. But as soon as the Americas were ‘rediscovered’ (actually Eric the red and other Scandinavians had discovered the continent 500 years before) these nations were wiped out. In Mexico, the Spanish had control, destroying the pagan Aztecs and Mayans.

In the Caribbean, similar changes took place as the different islands inhabited by small tribes, were quickly overrun by the Spanish, French, Dutch, Portuguese and British. The Caribbean soon became a huge slave market, which prompted some slave rebellions, which set some islands free. Now most Islands have shrugged off their original colonisers, although there are a few islands left under the jurisdiction of mother countries. To conclude, all the places we have studied today, have similar patterns of development, and this can also be seen in other places around the globe. Although colonisation could be cruel, it was nothing compared to the barbarity of some of the ancient civilisations.

Science 8. YouTube week 2

Where I’m at, YouTube WEEK 2

I have recently started to make a YouTube channel and in this essay, I will be describing were I’m at so far. Even before I started the RonPaul science section on YouTube, I wanted to make a channel and the lessons that I have watched have greatly enhanced my knowledge on the matter.

So far, I have found the content of my vids and found my target audience and value proposition, have set up my basic channel, uploaded my channel Icon, put up my channel name and have written my about page. So let me describe some of these. The content will be lego star wars stop-motion and my target audience are people who like star wars and lego and who enjoy watching those put together in stop-motion videos. This leads to my value proposition, which is offering the world quality stop-motion videos to be enjoyed. My channel name is: Galaxy Brick Films and my channel Icon is a star wars character. My about page is complete and it basically describes my value proposition and content.

I have not been able to make a channel banner, but am still working on it.

History 8. SE Asia and Oceania

Southeast Asia and Oceania.

Introduction

This essay will be on the developments in Southeast Asia and Oceania from 500 AD to 1750 AD. The essay will be split into three main parts, the introduction, the main body of the essay and the resolution

Around 500 AD, while tumult reigned in the west, following the consequences of the collapse of the once-mighty Roman Empire, little happened in the Southeast fringes of the world. It would take over a millennia for people in Europe to discover the exotic islands of the Pacific Ocean. From 500-1000 AD, there were no great changes in the southeast edges of Asia, meaning the Siam peninsula, Indonesia and the Philippines. The Srvijaya Empire, managed to grab a few slithers of the Siam peninsula, (which was mainly inhabited by small kingdoms) and some parts of Malaysia.

But for the most part, there was no great, dominating Empire, such as the Roman empire. Instead, there were small people groups, such as the Aborigines, who inhabited different islands. The same can be said for Oceania as there were really only a few small communities of farmers and hunters spread around some ten thousand Islands. The famous Maori started their communities in New Zealand, while The aborigines were dominant in Australia. Then, from 1000 to 1750, things started to change.

When Columbus sailed to the new world in 1492, a whole new exploration era was launched. People in Europe started to take a new interest in the world around them and although many were focused on the americas, others wondered about the rest of the world. Britain, France, Spain, Portugal and the Netherlands were the leading colonisers, as each country became more powerfully dominant through overseas colonies. It was did not take a long time for the europeans to travel to SE Asia and Oceania. Britain soon had colonies on New Zealand and Australia, while the Spanish settled for the Philippines and the Dutch for some smaller islands.

By 1750, most of the earlier tribes and kingdoms had disappeared under the massive wave of colonisation, which in a way upgraded the islands to more modern civilisations.
