History Week 4. My Grievances

My grievances                                                                Date: 10/14/1775

By Samuel Lawton, RPC student and delegate to congress.

The following letter describes the current situation in the 13 colonies and my response to Parliament concerning my grievances against parliament’s acts which they have imposed on the colonists.

A letter to Parliament

In this letter I would like to raise some points against the taxation acts which the house of Parliament in Britain has imposed upon us. While I do not agree that all taxation is bad, the extent to which the house has taxed us is a major issue, one that must be solved immediately.

The current situation, is indeed very disturbing. I understand that Britain has many financial difficulties resulting from the late war that occurred here against the French. I understand that this has drained the treasury and that more money is needed to replenish the financial needs of Britain. The house has therefore made the decision to tax the colonies in a way that has never been done before. Taxes on supplies such as Paper, Tea and on Imports has started to create unrest here in the colonies. Acts such as the Quartering Act and the Molasses Act are actually quite unfair in many respects to the people here.

I strongly believe that many of these Taxes are unrighteous and not needed. I believe there needs to be a change in the way policies are managed here in the colonies and I am also very supportive of the Idea that there should be a delegate from the colonies who could represent us in the house of Parliament. This is also the common thought here in the colonies and “No Taxation without Representation” has become a common phrase. While I detest the Idea of war with Britain (for rumours of such a conflict have been circulating recently) I do solemnly believe that change is needed. These changes are listed in the next few paragraphs and I bid the house to at least consider some of my highlighted points.

Import Tariffs

The first issue I have with Parliament, are the Import tariffs which the government of Britain has imposed upon us. While I understand that the Mercantilistic form of trading has the world in deadlock, I plead Parliament to consider free trade. The colonies would prosper and become wealthier and life here would be much improved. Free trade also provides wealth for Britain though, as the British government would not have to subsidise export, and export itself would probably increase.

What makes a country wealthy, is a productive nation where people have the freedom to buy necessities at the cheapest price possible, therefore saving money and making the people wealthier. Also, limiting imports actually cuts back on exports, which in a free trade might have grown better.

Taxes on daily needs

The second issue I have with Parliament are the high taxes imposed on daily needs. The Stamp act and the Tea Act are two examples. These taxes are imposing on our daily needs, on necessities that make life enjoyable here. Also, why are these high taxes imposed entirely on us? If the British public aren’t paying these high taxes, why should we? And where are these taxes going? To line the pockets of wealthy London businessmen, or for our benefit? I understand that debts from the late war need to be repaid, but is there no other way? Even just a small increase on our national taxes to repay debts in the long run are better than high taxes on goods that we need.

To conclude, I would like to say once more, that I do not believe all taxation is wrong. Yet I am afraid to say that in this circumstance parliament has gone too far.

Greetings from the delegates of Congress

Yours Sincerely

Samuel Lawton

Lego StopMotion Channel update

Hi readers!

I’m sorry that I have to do an update so soon on my coming-soon YouTube channel, but I realised I was a bit vague in the last post, so in this post I run over what the channel will be about.

So, firstly, the channel name will be Galaxy Brick Films and the content on the channel will be Lego Star Wars stop motion. The content will be comprised of small Star Wars related stories using Lego mini figures and the animation technique called StopMotion. I hope to post at least two of these videos a month.

That’s about it. Again, I’m sorry that I had to make this update only an hour after the initial channel announcement, but I do realise the importance of making myself clear as to the channel content.

Hope you enjoyed reading

Lego StopMotion channel coming soon!

Hi readers!

I have an announcement to make and that is, that my Lego Star Wars StopMotion channel is coming soon on YouTube!

This was an original Idea for the Grade 8 Science YouTube section project, but I have always wanted to make a channel about StopMotion.

So far, I have set up most of the channel page, but I am still lacking a channel intro video and some content. This means that (hopefully) in a few weeks time I’ll be able to upload some videos and then the channel.

I will make a post when I have successfully launched the channel and I will provide a link so you can check it out.

Me and my sister Jael are collaborating on this project, her blog can be found here: https://ron969127444.wordpress.com

I’m really looking forward to this and I hope some of you are too!

-I could study the lives of famous composers (e.g. Mozart, Bach)

-I could go into explaining the technicalities of Classical Music

I could describe the characteristics of Classical Music

-I could go into what I like playing on my recorder

-I could go into famous pieces

-I could describe Background music I like, such as Electric and Ambient

-I could explain what I use Classical Music for

-I could highlight some other songs I like, such as “In Christ Alone” and “It Started Out as a Feeling”

Lesson 21. Essay: My Favourite Music

My favourite type of music

Introduction

This essay will be on my favourite type of music and a lot of other information rotating around that subject. I play the recorder and I naturally love music. I think my favourite would be classical music, as the serenity and the general atmosphere created by it makes it unique. Also, classical music was headed by some of the most famous musical artists, including Mozart, Bach, Beethoven and many others.

Classical music can be great relaxing music, as well as great study music. When you listen to Classical music it can really take you to another world, where you can dream and disconnect with the world around you. This genre of music has also dominated much of the early musical world and is probably among the most famous music types.

Some of the most well-known classical pieces include:

Moonlight Sonata, (No. 14) by Ludwig van Beethoven

Für Elise, by Ludwig van Beethoven

Rondo Alla Turca by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Eine kleine Nachtmusik by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Johann Sebastian Bach

These are just a few of the hundreds of pieces compiled by these famous artists. From 1750 to 1820, Classical music became more prominent, this time length usually being referred to as “The Classical Period”. I would say that my favourite piece would be “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” by Mozart and I would also say that Mozart is my favourite artist.

Other types of music that I like include background music genres such as Ambient and Electric both of which I really like, as they have more beat and tempo in the music. But I have not really explored too many types of music so I do not know that many different genres.

Conclusion

To summarise, my favourite type of music is classical, because of the serenity and the calming pleasure I enjoy while listening to it. Some famous artists are Beethoven, Mozart and Bach, all three having left behind a great legacy, even two hundred years after their deaths. But I also like Background music like Ambient and Electric. That concludes my essay on music.

Lesson 20. Essay: A Bad Day

A bad day I experienced

Introduction

This essay will be on a bad day I had, how I reacted and what I could have done better. That day was in fact a lesson for me and it shows how you should take care and listen to your elders. This shows a time when I did neither and so it had its consequences. So, the fact is, is that that day resulted in a bad one for me, because it was my own fault.

Note: I cannot remember the date, so please bear with me.

It happened in 2012, when I was six years old and our family had gone to Switzerland for my brother who was born that year. For some background, we were living in Africa on the mission field and as I said, were only in Switzerland, because my brother was due. Anyway, some time after he was born, we went one day to visit some friends and they had a large tree in their garden. Well, I was a bit of a climber then, so I quickly made it my goal to climb up the tree. While I was up there, my dad told me to come down and then the adults went inside the house. I did not obey my father, and stayed in the tree.

I cannot quite remember how, but that I was not careful was evident, for all at once I felt myself falling out of the tree and landing on the ground with a loud thump. I started screaming as pain shot up my shoulder and my parents quickly hurried me to the hospital. We soon found out I had broken my right collar-bone and I had to wear a sling for a few weeks after. I think I reacted as any six-year-old might react, with crying. I honestly can’t remember everything, apart that I did cry a lot. But I think I must have just been in an overall state of shock and misery for some time.

Looking back there were some things I could have done to avoid the unfortunate accident I led myself into. Firstly, I think I could have just avoided climbing the tree in the first place and secondly I should have immediately come down from the tree when my dad told me to. I think I should have taken some more care, for I was somewhat too little to understand the danger of being in a tree. As a word of warning, as I found out the hard way, it is always a mistake to disobey your parents. In the fourth commandment in the Bible it says, “honour your mother and father” and by honouring them the verse means obeying them.

But I will not go on about it too much, as that day is over and there is nothing I can do to undo the past. I should just look at it as a lesson to obey your parents and be careful.

Lesson 19. Essay: My Homeschool

My Homeschool

Introduction

In this essay I go over my homeschooling experience so far. The essay is made up of an Introduction, (which you are now reading) three body paragraphs and then a conclusion.

I have been homeschooled for as long as I can remember, as this was a decision made by my parents before they got married. Let me explain a few parts of my background and the life of my parents. My name is Samuel, I am half British and half Swiss and live in Manchester, England. My mum grew up in a Christian family in Switzerland. My dad was born in England and became a Christian a bit later on. Both he and my mum, although they had never seen or met each other, had the same calling, which was to go to the mission field in west Africa

When my parents met, my Dad was (and still is) strongly pro-homeschool. When he married my mum and had me and my siblings, homeschooling began. I really like being homeschooled, as the flexibility compared to state school is amazing. I can easily set school goals and most of the time I have no problem reaching those goals. My main subjects at the moment are, Maths, English, History, Science and French. I would probably say Maths and History are my favourites, although I still like the other subjects. The Ron Paul Curriculum is a big part of my homeschool, as I do English, History and Science on there.

I think that homeschooling is very important and that it is much better than ordinary school for several different reasons. I think that some of the things they teach at school are just lies. For example,  the big bang theory and evolution, which leads children away from the biblical truth of God’s creation. I also highly recommend the Ron Paul curriculum for homeschooling, as it is designed in many ways to fit my schooling needs.

Conclusion

To conclude, lets summarise a few important points from the essay. The essay was on my homeschooling experience so far. I first went into some background, explaining where it all started and then I moved on to describe the subjects that I am learning. I then explained why I find homeschooling important and why I think state schools aren’t that great, as they lead you away from the biblical truth.

Lesson 18. One Paragraph: When I helped my friend

When I helped my friend

People generally call me helpful, they say that I ask if they need help and I do think that is true. From this information, I think I can deduct that I am a helpful person. Anyway, I cannot exactly recall anything huge I ever did, so I will just take one of the most recent things that happened. A few months ago, myself, my mum and siblings went on holiday to Switzerland. My mum is from there and her home-church organises a kids-camp in the Alps every year. This was the first year for me as leader, as the other years I had been a participant and so I had to help all week with the different games and activities for the kids. This is not technically a time I helped ‘a friend’ yet I did help all the other leaders, whom I would count as friends.

Note. I wrote this essay a few months ago

Lesson 17. One Paragraph: My Best Birthday present

My best birthday present

This is a hard question, as I have had some great birthday presents in my fourteen birthdays so far. But there is one that stands out as a great present. This was a lego Star Wars set (set number 75103) that I got for my 10th birthday four years ago. At the time, I knew next to nothing about Star Wars, but when I went to the local toy shop and saw this set, I really wanted to get it. Since then I have watched all of the Star Wars movies and this set is still my favourite lego set I have.
